So here I am all set for another adventure to the northeast part of India, the land of the seven sisters. I will be hopping through Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Pelling, Gangtok and Bagdogra. These form the highlight of my northeastern Odessa. All the bookings are done through MakeMyTrip.com for Rs. 86,000 that consists of flights, three-star hotel bookings and car service all the way for 10 days. It seemed a fair price for the summer. I guess an average package anywhere in India with car service, flight and hotel, sightseeing included will cost roughly Rs. 10,000 a day all-inclusive. This has been my experience as I have travelled around India. The MakeMyTrip package was a bit cheaper than this average.
I had gone to the north east as a child during my boring school days, but that was almost 30 years ago. This will be an all different trip as I am going solo this time. I am looking forward to photographing the peaks of Kangchenjunga and the black tea gardens of Darjeeling. I am dying to see the toy train that runs through the hills which was first shown in the Hindi film “Aradhna” with Sharmila Tagore. Sharmila’s entire song “Mere Sapno Ki Rani Kab Aaye Gi Tu” was shot on this toy train.
Pelling is another wonderland and, like Gangtok, is a part of Sikkim. It is the state where the famous villain Danny came from. He still has a cinema hall named after him and a booze refinery. Bagdogra will be my landing point. I am thinking to go forward to Bhutan from here through rail from the new Jalpaiguri station. But that has yet to be confirmed.
