In the world of God and religion, awakening or a profound spiritual experience is something a lot of devotees and followers of different faiths have experienced. Modern day Christian evangelists and faith healers have rallied heavily on the ability of people to experience this and transcend the awakening to self-heal their wounds. We have seen this happen in prayer gatherings when people are howling and even reduced to tears, that they feel close and almost touched by God. These are similar to experiences people on LSD or Lithium say that they have experienced, a so-called eureka or alleluia moment when you feel the divine is acting through you. This, many people say, is accompanied by voices, deep and bright light flickering in the mind, a feeling of one going through a tunnel. A born again feeling, a feeling of being drowned by the love of God.
Many times the spiritual experience comes in a form of epiphany, as the highly imaginative and intuitive part of the brain is triggered. One can also have an outer body experience or a feeling of weightlessness. I, for one, used to have days where I would be dancing for hours all through till the morning and then come home to find my body full of energy and charge. I used to write poetry for days after my experience. There is a deep sense of oneness, serenity and self-assurance that comes into you when you go through the awakening. One turns towards God and goodness and feels protected by a higher being. It’s like you are feeling light again, doubts have suddenly disappeared and you just see things as they are without any judgement.
In a lot of self-actualised saints, the spiritual experience brings a kind of sheen and glow to their face, it acts like the hello effect and one seems wise to others. But spiritual experiences are intense, they can drain you both mentally and physically. They can cure confusion in the mind and one rarely has people he can share these experience because people think you have lost it or are doing drugs. You look like a fool, it is important to find someone you trust enough to share your awakening as a master or a guide who has been through a similar journey. A feeling of being a fool’s paradise, a heightened feeling of euphoria and confidence pervades you. I, for one, find it difficult to forget my own awakening and spiritual experience and many times want to bathe in its nectar but alas, it doesn’t come to me anymore.
